Colostomy take-down in 13, 12, 11...

Most of you know that Parker had to have emergency surgery to have a colostomy put into place the day he was born.  Well, after three and a half months of emptying colostomy bags, changing colostomy bags (sometimes in public restrooms when the bags have blown!), ordering colostomy bag equipment, admitting Parker into the hospital for the surgery to repair his imperforate anus on June 30th, dilating his anus everyday since that surgery (which is as unpleasant as it sounds!) paying medicals bills, and not seeing his entire belly without a bag or his stomas since the day he was born, it is all going to come to in an end in 13, 12, 11 days...

Parker will be admitted on Monday, August 15th for pre-op and will undergo surgery for the colostomy take-down on Tuesday morning, August 16th. (Happy Anniversary, Mom & Dad!)  He should be in the hospital for about 4-5 days, depending on how his recovery goes.  After his last surgery, he was sent home early for fabulous progress, so we will hope for that again!  We are MORE than thrilled to have our little humpty dumpty put back together again!  It certainly feels like it took all of the kings horses and all of the kings men ... Chris, me, my mom & dad, Chris' parents, Selena & Brian, Erica & Scott, a phenomenal surgeon (Dr. Megan Durham: http://www.atlpedsurg.com/), phenomenal nursing staff at Egleston, and the support of our extended families and friends is what it took to make it through these past 3 and a half months!

Parker will still have some challenges with his spine and his foot (MRI on August 25th to check out his spine - Happy Birthday to Randi and Happy Anniversary to Randi and Terry!) but we know that with all of the love and support from you all, he will make it through all of these challenges as well as he has these past 3 months.  He is such a happy boy and is so strong already!

Reagan has been a wonderful big sister (older by 1 minute, remember?) and is so patient when we drag her along to Parker's urology appointments, surgical appointments, hospital stays, etc.  She is also a very happy baby and is easily consoled by a good snuggle from a grandparent while her mom and dad are busy talking to the doctors about Parker.  I joked with my mom the first time we went to Parker's post-surgical visit and said, "Can you be 'Team Reagan' while Chris and I are 'Team Parker' during this appointment?" (Twilight reference for those of you who aren't familiar...)  I was even tempted to make t-shirts for us, but I have no spare time on my hands - plus, when it all comes down to it, we are all on both teams, but sometimes we have to switch the teams around to be as efficient as possible. :)

Anyways, we just wanted to give you all the latest update since you have all been so sweet to ask how Parker is progressing.  He is a champ and we are so proud of him and his sister!!

In other news, we went to the pediatrician last Monday for the babies' weight checks, and Parker weighed in at 9lbs, 8ozs and Reagan was 8lbs, 2 ozs.  Our doctor was more than pleased with both of their weights, which made this momma happy!! (because let's be honest...breastfeeding 2 of them is a lot of work and I am happy to see it is paying off!) :)

Thanks again to all of you for your love and prayers - we can feel your support surrounding us everyday!!

Want to go through the colostomy bag change process with us through pictures?  Oh good, we thought you would! :)  Ready, set, go!

Above: Parker has to have a sponge bath every other day (when his bag is still on) and can have a real bath in the whale tub on the days that we change his bag...but NO soap near the stomas, so we wash his hair mid-air. :)

All clean! :)

Parker waits patiently (while staring Chris down) as Chris cuts the new colostomy bag.

"But, I don't LIKE this!"

Parker's stomas!

A new colostomy bag!  Changed every other day, emptied every time his diaper is changed.

Parker goes to his happy place! (He loves to stare at the birds that I painted while we work on this)

Another "happy place" shot! :)

Reagan gets love from whoever isn't hands-on during the bag change (it takes 2 to change the bag!)

Reagan on her play mat.

She looks serious, but she loves it! :)

She is very good at waiting patiently in a bouncy seat while we work with Parker! :)

Oh that's right, I have a blog...

Well hello, blog world!  Last you heard from us, we were 1 day away from having our sweet little bundles of joy.  I had good intentions of posting great news and pictures the weekend they arrived (Easter weekend), but that weekend we kind of had our world turned upside down! (in good, but also very challenging ways).

Here's a brief synopsis of what has been going on with the Even family...this is part of an email we sent to our families explaining some of the information that we now have about Parker:

I think you all know that while I was pregnant we found out that Parker had a 2 vessel umbilical cord, which can be a marker for VATER and VACTERL associations, and we knew while he was in utero that there were some questions on the his kidney structure and that he had 2 hemevertabrae (the V & R of VACTERL).  Because our perinatalogist already knew that there were some markers for possible VATER or VACTERL, she made sure that when Parker was born that the neonatalogists at Piedmont did a thorough look over on him, which is when we found out that his anus was not all the way open (the A of VACTERL).  This was the reason he was transferred to Egleston the night he was born and underwent the surgery for a colostomy.  Because of the surgery, Parker was not able to eat by mouth for about 5 days so he had a feeding tube, his BP was low from the surgery so he was on dopamine, his oxygen saturation was weak so he was on the ventilator for about a week, they inserted a picc line in his scalp to give him his meds and nutrition, and all the other little wires were for other IV's, monitors, etc.  We also saw upon his birth that Parker is missing some toes on his right foot - he has a fully formed right foot, but only has a big toe (this is the "L" of VACTERL).  Since I had a c-section, Chris actually saw Parker before I did and he and the nurse told me about his foot.  I felt panicked when they were telling me, but Chris said to me, "it's ok - it's really cute and he's going to be fine."  And he was right - we have all fallen in love with the right foot and we know that he will be able to adapt just fine!

Even though I have worked with babies in the NICU before, it was completely different seeing my own child in the NICU.  The day I was discharged from Piedmont, we went straight to Egleston for me to see Parker for the first time since he was born...and walking in the NICU for that first time was completely overwhelming.  I knew that they were taking great care of him there, but as a mother it was really hard to see Parker hooked up to all of that equipment.

For the first 2.5 weeks of the twins' lives, our days were completely involved with caring for Reagan at home, trying to get my blood pressure under control, visiting Parker at the hospital, and trying to eat and rest in between.  My mom has been staying with us since I was placed on bedrest, and my sister, nephew, and Chris' parents were all here the weekend the twins were born.  Thank GOD for great families who love and support us.

Chris, my mom and I all took the training on emptying and changing Parker's colostomy bag, and even though Chris and I were completely intimidated by the bag initially, it is not as hard to change as we were thinking.  The bag is temporary, and on June 30th, Parker will undergo the surgery to have his anus opened.  Once that procedure is completed, he will come home with us for a few weeks to heal, and will then go back into the hospital for one more surgery to take down the colostomy and put our little humpty dumpty back together again! :)

Parker will, of course, be following up with specialists for the earlier part of his life, and we feel so blessed that we live here in Atlanta where he is getting fabulous care.  We have been nothing but impressed with the staff at Egleston which is a part of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

If you want to read a little more about VACTERL, here is a great website about it: http://www.cincinnatichildrens.org/health/heart-encyclopedia/disease/syndrome/vacterl.htm.  Luckily, Parker's heart, esophagus and trachea look great, which are really the most serious parts of the association.  We feel so blessed that he is doing as well as he is!

Reagan has been quite the champ, traveling to the hospital and extra doctor's appointments for her brother - one day I am sure she will make him pay her back in one way or another! :)

We continue to ask for your prayers for our family as we have had a stressful but very blessed 2 months.  We will keep you updated on Parker's progress when we find a few spare minutes to get onto the computer! :)

We really appreciate all of your love and support!

T-1 day!

As I am lying in bed at the hospital, I am taking a quick minute to update everyone on this eventful week!

I went to my OB appointment on Tuesday morning this week, and after seeing that my BP was still elevated, I was still retaining fluid, and I was feeling light-headed and nauseated, my OB decided to admit me to the antepartum unit at the hospital.  We were told it may just be a few hours to monitor the babies and me, draw blood for labs, do an ultrasound, and then possibly go home if everything looks ok.  Well, after our ultrasound, the perinatalogist said, "You're not going home, and these babies will need to be delivered @ 37 weeks ..." which is this Friday!

I was initially disappointed that I wasn't going to be able to go home again before the babies are born, but my mom and Chris have been great about bringing stuff to me and keeping me company.  My mom has been sleeping in the oh-so-comfy cot that the hospital provides while Chris goes home every evening to sleep before a full day's work.  And the staff here at Piedmont Hospital have been so fabulous that I feel spoiled!

The plan is to have the babies on Friday ... as we are still unsure as to how they will make their arrival, we wait patiently to see what the doctor says tomorrow.  Either way. we will meet Parker and Reagan very soon!  The range of emotions surrounding this week have been overwhelming, and it all feels very surreal, but we are trying to stay calm and remember that God is in control!

We will be sure to keep you all posted when they arrive and we will, of course, share pictures as soon as possible! :)

Here's to the best Easter weekend of our lives!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Updates from bed rest...

Yup, bed rest.  As of this past Friday, my doctor has told me to "stay horizontal" and the best place to do that is in bed, right? :)  No signs of labor yet, but my blood pressure has been elevated and I have been retaining fluids so my OB told me the best thing to do is to rest, rest, rest.  Chris took great care of me this weekend, but in order for both him and I to keep our sanity while he has to continue working, my mom came up on Sunday and is here for the long haul!  She has been wonderful, bringing me meals and things to keep me busy while in bed, and her company has been fun, of course!

We are now going to the doctor every 3-4 days, so our next appointment is this coming Friday.  At this point, we are hoping to keep my BP and swelling at a safe level, and if we can and the babies don't make an appearance beforehand, we have scheduled a C-section on April 29th.  C-section, you ask?  Well, yes ... our little son, Parker, has decided to be a little mischievous and is breech in my belly.  So, as long as he is still breech on April 29th, they will do a C-section as to not put any undue stress on him, his sister or me.  If he turns, well then, it's anybody's game! :)

I'm not going to lie, bed rest is harder than it sounds.  Since I have been uncomfortable, sore, and tired, laying in bed is definitely what I need to be doing ... but I am feeling a little unproductive and worthless! My mom and Chris have to remind me several times a day to ask for help and stop doing things that I shouldn't be attempting.  It is hard to be a patient!  At least I know this will end in 2 weeks at the most, and as long as I am keeping these little piggies in my belly healthy, I can do anything for 2 weeks!

Our next appointment is Friday, so if we have any updates we will keep you all posted!

Week 33 & 34 - They're a-coming soon!

Some pictures from the last 2 weeks, and I have to make this a quick post because I can no longer sit comfortably at the computer desk!

Week 33

Week 34

As of today's ultrasound, Parker is 5 lbs, 2 oz and Reagan is 5 lbs, 6 oz...no wonder I feel like I am carrying an anvil around with me! :)  They are both still doing well.  The perinatalogist recommended that I not go past 38 weeks, so we should have these bundles of joy here before April 28th! (that's soon!!)  I have been pretty uncomfortable in most positions and have been mostly laying in bed or on the couch (except for the trips to the doctor's offices) to relieve the swelling and overall uncomfortable-ness that my belly is creating on the rest of my body. :)

Chris and I are thrilled to know there is an end date in sight - now we just need to get through the next 3 weeks with as much grace and patience as possible...prayers for comfort and patience are always something we could use from our friends and family!

Updates from yesterday's ultrasound

We had our high-risk ultrasound yesterday, and wanted to share some info and some fun facts from it! :)

1. Reagan is approximately 4 lbs, 12ozs
2. Parker is approximately 4 lbs, 14ozs
Now, these are just estimates, given that the bigger they get, the harder it is to be accurate since they are squished in there.  So, they said these were the best guesses at their weights, but they could be +/- 12 ozs...which essentially means that I have about 9-10lbs of baby in my belly! (no wonder I am tired and feel like a truck has run me over!)

3. Reagan has a head full of hair! :) (can we take a minute to be amazed at the fact that you can see these details in utero?!)  Chris and I were floored!  We actually pictured that both of them would be bald, so this was a fun little surprise for us.  We didn't get a chance to ask about whether or not Parker had any hair, because I was starting to feel light-headed again during the scan (this happened at my last appointment, as well), so it slipped my mind.  But, we go back in 2 weeks, so we will ask then.

4. We got to see Parker have the hiccups while they were doing his scan - so funny!!  And even weirder to see his little body shake at the same time that I could feel the hiccups happening.  I have been feeling both of them have the hiccups for weeks now, but it is so fun to see them!

5. After about 3 months of inconclusive images of Parker's kidneys, they are pretty sure as of yesterday that they are able to say that he has a "horseshoe kidney" - meaning that both kidneys have formed, but they are connected (in the shape of a horseshoe).  You see, we found out in January that Parker has a 2 vessel umbilical cord (as opposed to a usual 3 vessel cord) and when this occurs (which can happen often during the "twinning process") they have to look for variations in the kidneys.  Well, for the past few months, the Perinatologist has said that she can definitely see a right, functioning kidney, but has not been able to locate a left one.  But, that changed yesterday when she said she could see both, but they were connected.  Chris and I have not been too worried since our take-home message from her has been that whatever the anatomy of the kidney(s), they are functioning, which is all that matters!  So, we have been praying and just trying to trust that God has sent us to the right people to take care of our little babies - and we have been nothing but impressed with our care at Atlanta Perinatal Specialists.  All that to say we will have some follow-up appointments for him after his birth, and the neonatalogist will check both of them out carefully while still in the hospital, but we have a really good feeling that he will be just fine and causing trouble in no time!  :)

That's all to report for now...these babies are keeping me tired, but Chris and I are getting more and more excited to meet them soon!

Dang you, Etsy!!

I just have to share and see how many people out there can commiserate with me ... why was Etsy invented?  It is the most fabulously addicting website that I have ever been on, and it NEVER FAILS that I leave the site having purchased something.  Newest obsession for the twins' nursery as of 9:50pm?  http://www.etsy.com/listing/68463917/white-bird-nest-hanging-clock

I have shown some restraint and haven't ordered it ... yet.  But, I will think about it all week.

Where are all of the clean spoons?

Chris: "Hey, do we not have any clean spoons?"
Me: "Um ... I think they are all in the dishwasher waiting to be washed."
Chris: "How many spoons do you use in a day?"
Me: "Well, between the cereal and the ice cream .... I guess all of them."

Seriously, that's all I want these days.  Cereal and ice cream.  There is an epidemic of dirty spoons in the Even household, and Chris just wants a clean spoon to use to eat his yogurt.  And he doesn't complain, because at least I am eating, which is something that I was struggling with for awhile.  The problem is that I seem to be eating things that require spoons, and we only have so many spoons, which means that when he gets home from work, we have to wash a spoon so he can eat a snack.  Why cereal and ice cream?  Who knows, but it is ALL that I want.

And with this little vignette, we welcome you to our lives 32 weeks into this pregnancy!  :)

It sure has been a a busy couple of weeks around here!  I went to the Perinatal ultrasound appointment last Monday (by myself for the first time, because Chris was out of town for work) and while I was on the table, I started to feel very light-headed, started sweating profusely, and the room started spinning.  The sonographer told me to roll over to my left side, so I did ... and it didn't help.  So then she told me to sit up, so I did ... and it didn't help.  So then she had me sit in the chair next to the table and got me some Sprite.  That seemed to help me get back to baseline, but it took a couple of minutes.  She said, "I know this sounds weird, but it isn't all that bad of a sign ... it just means the babies are growing like they should be!  But, when you lay flat on your back, they are cutting off your blood flow ... so don't lay on your back anymore."  Check!

We went to our childbirth class at Piedmont Hospital this past Saturday, and while we found a lot of the information to be helpful, we also found a lot of the information to be overwhelming.  One of my favorite statements from Chris during the class came after the instructors talked about emergency C-sections.

Instructor: "You should know that if you have to have an emergency C-section, your spouse will probably not be able to be there because they won't have time to get him prepped and scrubbed-in for the surgery."
Chris: "Oh, that won't happen.  I will just be wearing my paper scrubs that are issued from the nuclear power plant and run right in after you.  Don't worry."
Me: "Oh. Good."

I started to feel panicked on Saturday night thinking of all of the things that could potentially go wrong during labor and delivery...and then Chris reminded me that they have to tell you all of those things to cover their bases and keep their patients well-informed.  I told him, "It's just that there are so many things that will be out of our control during that time, and that's what makes me nervous..."  and he said, "Right. That's what makes labor and delivery challenging for people like us!  But, we have to trust God, and also put some faith in the medical staff and trust that they know what they are doing."  And for those of you that know Chris, being out of control is not a situation in which he feels 100% comfortable, either, so this was a very comforting statement coming from him.  We talked about the actual process that the body goes through to give birth, and decided that only God could design such a complicated and efficient process to give birth to these little human lives!  What an amazing journey!

We almost have the nursery finished, I'm just missing some pieces to hang over the cribs.  I have a few ideas, I just need to make a decision and stick with it.  Chris told me the other night that he is ready to have the babies here in our lives..."You just wait for so long ... "  I cannot wait to see how wonderful he is going to be with Parker and Reagan!

We celebrated Chris' 28th birthday at the end of February - HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!  This will be the last one that we celebrate with just the 2 of us in our little family.  I took him to Rays on the River for brunch that weekend, and we ate until our hearts and bellies were content.  If you live in the Atlanta area, we highly recommend their Sunday brunch - so yummy!

Here are some pictures from the past few weeks:

What happened to the past few weeks?!

So, I haven't been working for the past few weeks and everyone keeps asking if I am bored...NOPE!  We have been so busy I haven't even had time to be bored!

My mom, sister, nephew and grandparents came up to visit for a week (we missed you, dad!) and we had a blast!  Landry's newest thing is to blow raspberries all day long, so we all joined in the fun! :)

Me, Landry, my mom and my grandma - 4 generations!

In case you can't tell, I am completely head-over-heels for this little guy!  It was so fun to have them stay in our house and be a part of bath time, meal time and most importantly, play and snuggle time! :)

My sweet Atlanta friends, Anne Anderson, Kristen Adams and Katie Putnam, threw a shower for me and the babies last weekend, and it was such a fun time to be with my friends and family!

Kristen and Katie ... Anne must have been behind the camera! ;)

My delicious cake that matched the nursery PERFECTLY!

The spread, including the diaper cake and the real cake.  Everything was beautiful and yummy!

Chris' parents came up for the shower and are staying this week to help us add storage space in our attic and garage - which will be such a blessing over the next few years!  Chris and his dad have been in the attic for the past few days ... they've come out for meals and to sleep, but that is about all we have seen of them! :)  They are about finished up there and are now working on the garage storage.  Randi, Chris'mom, and I have been running errands, shopping, and doing things around the house to keep busy.  Unfortunately, I dont have as much get-up-and-go as I did pre-pregnancy, but we are enjoying the down time, too!

Getting prepared for all of our visitors while still trying to get the nursery and the house organized has kept me busier than I could have imagined!  The nice thing is that I have had time to rest in between tasks and errands.  These babies are getting bigger by the day and are wearing their momma out fast! :)

I think I left off at week 25 with the bump pictures ... so here we go:

Week 25

Week 26
(I'm missing week 27 ... I think we were nuts or something.  Go figure!)

Week 28 - This is one of my maternity pictures that Selena took.  She is so talented!

Chris and I are doing well - hard to believe the babies could be here any time within the next month or 2!  We are having so much fun getting ready! :)  Here are a few more of our favorite maternity shots that Selena took:

Weeks Twenty-three & Twenty-four!

It's so hard to believe that we are already 5 days into the 24th week of this pregnancy!  On one hand, time seems to have flown by, but on the other hand, it seems like a long time ago that I was newly pregnant and overwhelmingly nauseated 24 hours a day.

Someone asked me the other day if I was one of the women that "just loved being pregnant?"  I wasn't sure how to answer that question ... I did not enjoy the nausea and exhaustion that lasted well into the 2nd trimester, but is it the coolest feeling the world to be growing two little babies and to feel them moving inside of me?  YES!!  It IS the coolest feeling!  And it only makes us more and more excited to actually meet Parker and Reagan within the next few months.

The anticipation is like something we have never experienced before - because we know the end result is going to be like nothing we have ever experienced before.  We have literally rearranged 3 rooms in our house, overhauled all of our closet space, and have plans to add shelving and other storage necessities in our attic and garage to maximize our space.  But all this for 2 little bodies that are still so small that they fit in my belly?  It is so hard to wrap our heads around it all!  I keep walking into the nursery and looking at the cribs trying to picture what Parker and Reagan will look like laying in the cribs ...

I remember feeling this way when my sister, Selena, was pregnant last year with her son, Landry.  I kept wondering what he would look like, act like, smell like (is that weird?) and how he would change as he grew.  But I had no idea that those questions would multiply both in number and intensity when it is now our own children that we are wondering about.  These 2 little miraculous mysteries are so hard to conceptualize!

Here we are at 23 weeks.  I have affectionately named my baby 'bump' the "twin torso" because the word 'bump' just doesn't cut it!!

And here we are at 24 weeks!

Only one week left at work and then I will be home until Parker and Reagan arrive...I am really looking forward to some time to rest and get ready for these sweet babies to be here!

Let the nursery festivities begin!

Happy New Year everyone!  Chris and I had a great trip home to Orlando over the week of Christmas, and came back to a very chilly Atlanta!

I got Chris a Kindle and he got me a Coach purse...this was our last hurrah for a few years! :)

Our sweet nephew, Landry, on Christmas morning.  I could kiss and snuggle him all day long!

Chris' sister, Erica, and her new husband Scott.  The sweet kitty in Scott's hands is their newest addition, Lola!

Our very dear friends, Diane Rothrock, Virginia Bibler and my sweet sister, Selena Fettig, threw me a baby shower while we were home (the day after Christmas!) and us girls had a great time getting together with all of the women in my life that live in Florida.  We had a car-full on the way back to Atlanta because of all of the generous baby and Christmas gifts that baby boy and girl Even received.  OH, and we now have names for baby boy and baby girl Even: Parker Jay and Reagan Lynn. :)

Virginia, Me, Diane & McKenna, Selena

My mom came back to Atlanta with us and spent the week helping us purge, organize, move furniture, paint, etc. and she also worked on the bedding for the babies!  After this week, we can now call the former office the "nursery," and the former upstairs spare room the "office/spare room."  Things are a little tight, but that is all part of the fun, right?!

We went shopping while we were in Orlando for fabric for the crib sheets, bumper pads and bed skirts, all the while still trying to stick with my bird theme that I so obsessively wanted.  This is what we have come up with so far...(it is hard designing a room for a boy and a girl!).  The striped bird fabric below was my "inspiration fabric."  I loved the colors, the birds, and the stripes and polka dots. It will be incorporated into both the Parker and Reagan's bumper pads and bed skirts (and maybe some other fun projects later on!)

And from this fabric, we chose this yellow for the nursery walls:

and got chocolate brown curtains for the windows:

This is Parker's bed skirt that my mom made while staying here this week (a shot with the yellow walls and brown curtains) Reagan's skirt will have teal fabric where the green is, and pink fabric where the teal is.  {Pay no attention to the man behind the bed skirt...}

Here is their closet where we have a "blue" shelf, complete with blue hangers for Parker and a "pink" shelf, complete with pink hangers for Reagan, and we also have a fun new hanging storage bin for sheets, burp cloths and other essentials:

And what bird-themed nursery would be complete without a birdhouse night-light? (it makes me smile every time I see it!)

And here I am at 22 weeks.  Feeling HUGE and already a bit tired and pretty sore in my back ... but we figured the pictures will be fun (and comical!) to look at later in life when I *hopefully* have a waistline again!! (mind you, I am not wearing any make-up and my hair is a mess...just focus on the babies in my belly, please!)

HELLO!!!!  Yup, there are 2 babies in there.  I can't wait to see how big I am going to be by the end (please note the sarcasm in my typing!). I know that Parker and Reagan's sweet faces will be totally worth it, though!

My OB has told me to stop working as of February 1st, so my last day of work at the hospital will be Monday, January 31st...which is QUICKLY approaching!  It is so hard to believe, but at the same time, I am very grateful to have some time to rest before the babies come.

I think that is all we have to report from the Even household for now.  It has already been a busy and productive start to the New Year!
