SuckFest 2013: Day 4, Momma is weary...

The twins and I recently took a 2.5 week trip - first to Orlando for a little over a week to see our immediate families and then we took a road trip up to Pittsburgh to visit my mom’s side of the family and to celebrate my Grandmother’s 80th birthday!  Here are some pictures of the fun:

Just hanging out at the mall after Grams & Gramps Even bought us new kicks!
(Parker had to get 2 different size shoes for the first time ... I cried.)

Reagan playing monkey in the middle with Uncle "Sock" and Aunt Erica!
(Parker was in bed with a 102 temp.  Always fun while traveling!!)

Hanging out at the neighborhood pool!

Gee & Daddo Rexroad with the 3 oldest grandchildren!

Daddo with Colson (Landry's little brother).

ROAD TRIP!!  This was the one moment during the 2-day car trip to PA when all 4 kids were asleep.  Definitely photo-worthy!!
Summer in Pittsburgh!!  Unbelievably beautiful this time of year.

"A Streetcar Named Desire!" at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum.
Landry, Parker and Reagan on the mini-trolley.

Had a blast at South Park, PA.
All five of my maternal grandparents great-grandchildren!
L to R: Reagan, Parker, Landry, Colson (being held by my Aunt Kris), and Deklan.

We stayed at my in-laws house the first few nights in Orlando, and it was on the first night there that Parker and Reagan figured out how to get out of their pack and plays.  Fun times.  So, I called my hubby who was still in Atlanta (because of work and school) and told him to take down their cribs and make room for their “big kid” beds because it was the safest way to go … and when we arrived home 2.5 weeks later, their crib mattresses were on the floor ready for their big kid bums.

“Give it a week!” they say; “Be patient!” they say; “Don’t start bad habits!” they say.  Well, being a music therapist, I have a strong background in shaping behavior/behavior modification and I usually feel confident in my parenting when it comes to these matters.  But this.  This is a whole new ball game, my friends.

The first night they did pretty well and fell asleep reasonably fast … of course we had just finished a two-day car trip and didn’t get them to bed until about 10:30 that night.
Awww....
The next day, “nap” time made me want to stab my eye out, and the rest of the week has pretty much been the title of this blog entry.  We have literally removed everything from their room except their beds and the dressers (mind you all of the drawers they can reach are empty because of the 10:00pm fashion shows).

My kids are sleep deprived and crabby, I am sleep deprived and crabby, Chris and I have not had one minute to get anything else done around the house (like unpack, clean, cook, etc) because we are either placing our sweet angels back into their beds every 5 minutes, or we are moving furniture around to accommodate the twins’ new living space.  I have been to Target 4 times in 2 days to buy bedding, childproofing items, guard rails, etc. and during one of these trips my children fell asleep in the stroller.  This does not happen.  Ever.

I’ve heard people say, “My child really liked their big bed and went right to sleep.”  Um, that’s great.  And highly unlikely with twins who feed off of each other’s every move.  There is not one inch of their bedroom that they have not tried to climb, jump on, run over, throw around or walk on top of.  For example, as I am typing this they are both standing on their windowsills looking out the window. STANDING ON THEIR WINDOWSILLS.  {Yes, I took a typing intermission to get them down}.

Other assorted fun things from this week:
1. Chris went to pick up our 2nd twin mattress and box spring yesterday evening  – we were told by the salesperson that the warehouse was open til 7.  He got there at 6:30 and was told by the not-so-helpful man that they closed at 6:00.  Chris said, “I’m here, and you are here, can’t I just pick them up?”  “No, my guys aren’t here to help.” “I can put them in my truck, just show me where they are.” “Can’t help you,” and walked away.  Well, Chris called the sales person immediately and we ended up getting an apology, free delivery today and $25 off each piece that we ordered.
2. Almost 3 years ago when we purchased the cribs, a Babies R Us employee told us the cribs turn into TWIN beds if you buy the conversion rails.  So we did.  And when Chris put the first bed together tonight, low and behold they are DOUBLE beds.  If you have seen Parker and Reagan’s room, you know that 2 DOUBLE BEDS will not fit in there, and we have no double bed mattresses or box springs.  So, we had to break that bed back down and pull out our old twin frame (but we don’t have a headboard, of course); they are sharing a bed tonight, we will buy another frame tomorrow, set it up tomorrow night and they will both finally have their own twin-sized big-kid bed.  We plan to just use the double beds when they are a little older and are in separate rooms.  I know, I know, having too many beds is definitely a first-world problem.
3. Parker fell asleep before Reagan last night, and she patted his belly and tucked him in.  Chris and I both got to watch it on the monitor and agreed it was totally worth all of the craziness this week just to see that one little gesture.
4. If you have called me, emailed me, expected to hear from me or see me this week, I am sorry that it has not happened.  I haven’t been this sleep-deprived and nuts since the twins were infants.  God Bless baby gates and doors that now lock from the outside!
